I don’t know about you, but I am increasingly and drawn to the idea of using natural products and ingredients for everything! I want to commit to switching over, one product at a time, as the ones in my home run out. Laundry detergent, all purpose cleaners, shampoo, etc…. it is all converting.

This whole idea in my head sounds FANTASTIC! But when it comes to actually doing it, I run into the same questions again and again:

What do I use instead? Does it work? Can I make it? How?

As I look forward to my wedding this summer, and all the fresh starts that come with it, it feels like the perfect season to start addressing these questions! Because, before I know it, I will be stocking a whole home with these things!

While it is important to me to remove toxins and chemicals in all areas of my home, an obviously important one to swap sooner than later is in what goes on my skin and absorbs into my body. This has drastically downsized my natural skincare routine to two steps: cleanser and balm! You can read my posts on oil cleansing and tallow and honey balm if you want to know more!

One of the most helpful parts of switching to natural skincare is how customizable it is! With all sorts of different skin concerns, these products and steps can be tailored to fit your skin’s specific needs. Keep reading to learn how you can personalize your natural skincare to fit YOU!

Essential Oil Blends for Skin:

Acne Blend:

  • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antimicrobial properties, tea tree oil effectively combats acne-causing bacteria while reducing inflammation and preventing future breakouts.
  • Jojoba Oil: Lightweight and non-comedogenic, jojoba oil moisturizes acne-prone skin without clogging pores, promoting a balanced complexion.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles/Aging Blend:

  • Carrot Seed Oil: Rich in antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin E, carrot seed oil protects the skin from free radical damage and encourages cellular regeneration, visibly improving fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: High in essential fatty acids and vitamins A and C, rosehip seed oil stimulates collagen production and enhances skin elasticity, effectively combating signs of aging while hydrating the skin.

Rashes/Irritation Blend:

  • Lavender Oil: With its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, lavender oil calms irritated or inflamed skin, reducing redness, itching, and discomfort associated with rashes or irritation.
  • Coconut or almond oil: Serves as a gentle and moisturizing base, forming a protective barrier to retain moisture and support the skin’s healing process, preventing further irritation.

Hyperpigmentation Blend:

  • Lemon Oil: Lemon oil contains natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and vitamin C, aiding in exfoliation and lightening hyperpigmentation for a brighter complexion. Exercise caution due to its potential photosensitizing effects.
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: With trans-retinoic acid, a natural form of vitamin A, rosehip seed oil fades dark spots, promotes skin renewal, and nourishes the skin with essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

Dryness/Dehydration Blend:

  • Rose Oil: Emollient rose oil locks in moisture and soothes dry, irritated skin with its luxurious aroma, delivering vitamins and antioxidants for deep hydration and nourishment.
  • Jojoba Oil: Resembling the skin’s natural sebum, jojoba oil effectively moisturizes dry skin without clogging pores, balancing oil production and preventing moisture loss for a hydrated and supple complexion.

How to Use:

Personally, I love to add these oil combinations at a 1% dilution to my tallow and honey balm! This works for me because my skin always needs the extra hydration. You can also use these essential oil blends for skin on their own after cleansing. Simply combine the following proportions in an amber glass dropper bottle and apply a thin layer to your clean skin:

  1. Acne Blend:
    • Tea Tree Oil: 3 drops
    • Carrier Oil (such as jojoba or grapeseed): 10 ml
    • Dilution: 1.5% (for facial application)
  2. Fine Lines and Wrinkles/Aging Blend:
    • Carrot Seed Oil: 3 drops
    • Rosehip Seed Oil: 10 ml
    • Dilution: 1.5% (for facial application)
  3. Rashes/Irritation Blend:
    • Lavender Oil: 3 drops
    • Carrier Oil (such as coconut or almond): 10 ml
    • Dilution: 1.5% (for general application)
  4. Hyperpigmentation Blend:
    • Lemon Oil: 2 drops
    • Rosehip Seed Oil: 10 ml
    • Dilution: 1% (for facial application; lemon oil can increase photosensitivity, so use caution)
  5. Dryness/Dehydration Blend:
    • Rose Oil: 3 drops
    • Jojoba Oil: 10 ml
    • Dilution: 1.5% (for facial application)

Adjust the number of drops according to your preference, sensitivity, and the strength of the essential oils. Always perform a patch test and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or underlying health conditions.

Enjoy your happy and healthy skin!
